Clapsaddle Farms will be introducing horse Kamps for Kids during the Spring and Summer of 2010.
Instructed by experienced, professional horse people, each Kamp will consist of four
days of horse activities and will cover a large range of topics customized for each Kamp.
Grooming: What are all of those brushes for? Scratches, fungus and thrush---what are they? Clipping a horse!
Saddling and bridling.
Lunging, ground driving, roundpen work: Why and how, natural horse games and how to use them.
Safety: For the horse place; for the handler; ring etiquette.
First Aid: What to have on hand; what to do until the vet comes; when to call the vet; finding the pulse; gut sounds; temperature; lameness issues.
Nutrition: How and what to feed your horse and when to feed it.
Anatomy: What are those body parts called and how they work?
Riding Skills: Based on skill level of the rider and may include: walk, trot, canter; rating the speed, lateral and vertical flexion; lateral work; obstacle work; flying changes and collection; rider position and how it influences the horse; riding with and without a bridle; lunge lesson for the rider; pilates for the rider; drill team or musical freestyles; challenge games and contests.
The last day of Kamp we will have a team competition to demonstrate what the campers have learned.
What to bring: riding clothes (boots or shoes with heels, helmet gloves), working clothes (comfortable shoes for the rest of the day, layers (t-shirt, sweater, coat) and work gloves. We will have to care for the horses even if it is cold and wet, so come prepared.
Lunch: please provide a sack lunch, bottled water and drinks (We have a microwave and refrigerator in the barn).
